Automotive engine oil has many direct functions ,this functions include:-

Lubrication

A fluid film must be maintained between all moving parts of the engine to reduce friction , heat , and wear ,that there is a very high pressures are encountered through combustion cycle .

Cooling

The engine oil is largely responsible for carrying heat away from the internal parts of the engine ,this is by providing oil film to the cylinder walls so thermally stable oils are required.

Deposite Control

Ring must remain free to function properly and to maintain a good seal.

oil consumption

Oils must be formulated with selected base stocks additives to control oil consumption.

- SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Oil viscosity grade  Classification.
- API (American Petrol- API (American Petroleum Institute) Engine oil performance level classification.
- MILL (Military ) Engine oil performance level classification .
- ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europeens d,Automobiles) Engine oil performance level classification
